In August 2008 I went down to London to play in a Mind Sports Olympiad tournament that was run by BIBA. There was an added prize of free entry into London Live 2008 provided by Backgammon in London for the winner.
The format was 6 x 11pt swiss, 4 matches on Saturday and 2 matches on Sunday
I did ask Mike Main the T.D. how ties would be split and was told Michael Crane Director of BIBA will sort it out the way he has always done it.
Well we had 4 players tie on 5 wins me being one of them.
All the results were emailed to M.C. everyone went home and we found out Sunday evening that Michael Crane put Peter Bennet in 1st place and me in 2nd place.
The system he used was the countback total score of all your opponents, I think this is a very fair way to decide ties.
But he made a mistake admitingly not his fault , He gave Peter and myself 21pts each in the countback not knowing one of my opponents did not show up on Sunday. Had he known that, my countback score would have been 22 as no shows get .5 for games not played.
As it was it was published on the BIBA web site .
1. Peter bennet
2 Irving Czechowicz
3. John Reddington
One week later we are informed that MSO have over ruled the result they dont like the way BIBA settle tie Breaks.
The official result is
1. John Reddington
2. Peter Bennet
3. Irving Czechowicz
This stinks but MSO decide who wins and not the T.D. or BIBA, i am lead to beleive.
At the BIBA event in September Backgammon in London kindly donated an extra entry into London Live to the winner as published by BIBA.
But Michael Crane refuses to acknowladge that would have been me.
1st saying its not .5 for no shows but the no show players score is comuted ie. 2/4 becomes 3/6. When he realised this still made me the winner he moved away and did not comment.
